How to create pretty wedding galleries with the Squarespace Portfolio page

Squarespace 7.1 has a lesser-known feature that’s perfect for creating a collection of galleries. It’s called the “Portfolio” page, and it has a structure that’s unique to any other kind of page.

If you’ve been a Squarespace user for a while, then you might be familiar with the Portfolio’s close cousin, the Project page from the York template family.

This format is awesome for showing off portfolio projects, wedding galleries, photoshoots, and case studies!

Let’s look at a few examples of the Portfolio page in action and I’ll show you how to set it up :)

Here’s an example of how one might style a simple Portfolio page:

My favorite feature that’s only available on the Portfolio-style page is the hover effect! When you roll your mouse over the thumbnail image, the white overlay + gallery title disappear. You can also set it up to have the opposite effect, where they only appear upon hover. Either way, it’s a super elegant touch!

You can also add anything you want above or below this gallery thumbnail grid section. For more examples, see the video at the bottom of this page.

And here’s how the Portfolio sub-page might look:

The sub-page is what Squarespace calls it; but it’s basically each individual album, gallery, or project.

In this example you see a “masonry”-style gallery, where none of the images are cropped and the grid is staggered. You can also opt for a uniform grid or a slideshow.

This format differs from a blog post and is more like a regular Squarespace page, because you can add any type of section to it. Again, this is a simple example of what you might create, but I think it looks great!

how to create a portfolio collection in SQSP

Go to the Pages panel

  1. Click the + sign to add a page

  2. In the popup under the Collection section, select Portfolio

Your collection will automatically load with 6 sample subpages (individual albums). Each of these will have a different layout so you can get an idea for what’s possible. All of them can be edited, or you can start from scratch and create your own.

My advice:

  1. Find a subpage that you like the look of, customize it to your liking, and then use it as a template going forward.

  2. Hit the three little dots next to the subpage you customized, and select Settings.

  3. In the popup window, scroll to the bottom and click Duplicate.

  4. Delete the rest of the subpages that you won’t be using.
