Portfolio: Coquette-inspired bakery website design

The inspiration

For this passion project, I wanted to create a custom website design for a bakery with a fun & flirty brand vibe. I wanted it to feel feminine, fresh, and not too traditional — think the “coquette” trend!

Specifically, I was inspired by all things vintage & girly: floral dresses, ruffles, pearls, and bows! Layers, scultpural elements, and pretty little details :)

I chose a colorful but soft color scheme filled with things you might find in a French patisserie:

  • Yellow lemon chiffon

  • Brown dutch cocoa

  • Pink french meringue

  • Lavender royal icing

  • Beige italian buttercream

  • And purple mulberry jam

…Okay, I’m absolutely RAVENOUS for some cake now ;D

The Design Plan

It’s super important that the images used on a website match [or complement] the design scheme, so I collected some tasty images in line with the color scheme, courtesy of Unsplash and Pexels.

I used feminine & detailed pattern backgrounds from Creative Market to add some intricate layering and an ultra-girly feeling.

I also selected a mix of font styles from Creative Market to reflect the light and bubbly feeling of the work this bakery creates, but keep the brand feeling modern and cool — just like how I imagine the team members themselves would be ;)

The custom Website design

The outlines around the images and the addition of tiny colorful dots remind me of piping on a cake, and the “ruffle”-shaped images are similar to a cute custom cookie!

Although I love incorporating pops of color and unique details, my number 1 priority is making sure the design is clean and intuitive — and I think it was achieved!

The copy throughout this homepage design was also written to match their “playful yet sophisticated” style :)

I’m obsessed with the outcome! What do you think?!
